The WSOP Main Event will play down to the final nine players today, and with Phil Ivey, Antonio Esfandiari and the UK's James Akenhead all still in the running, this could be the first time a pro player has won in a long time. Of course, Ivey was in a similar position in 2005 before busting out 20th. so nothing can be taken for granted.
Regardless, we won't find out today as once the field has been thinned to nine the WSOP packs up and comes back to play the final table in November, just as it did last year.
In terms of TV ratings that move worked somewhat, but the push into mainstream media was lacking something. A pro face at the table could address that problem this year.
Play starts at 12.00 PST (8pm in the UK), and in case you didn't know you can follow the action on PokerNews.
